Strive To Thrive, Don't Just Survive

by Juli Miezejeski

Why do you think I chose this particular caption for my website tag line?  These words written specifically in this order encapsulate the reason why I chose to coach women corporate executives and women professionals.  Listening to President Obama speak just a few days ago at a White House event commemorating International Women s Day, it absolutely floored me when he said that women today still only make up  3% of the Fortune 500 CEOs.     Isn t it interesting, however, that women make up the majority of today s workforce?

Having left the corporate workforce, a little over 10 years ago, it ceases to amaze me how little change has taken place with regard to breaking the proverbial  glass ceiling .  In fact, while attending a local women s group a few weeks ago, a young woman who received her undergraduate degree 10 years ago, said she decided not to obtain her MBA.  She felt that because men still dominated the business world, she would never be able to make a difference.  Why are young women giving up so easily?

It may be true that today s economic climate is a major factor keeping women in their comfort zones at their jobs, if they still have jobs.   Therefore, survival mode has become the norm of the day.  It is common opinion that this recession is almost as extreme as the Great Depression.  However, many great fortunes were made and success achieved even during those dire times.  So, women take heed, and Strive To Thrive, Don t Just Survive!
